Create a Sharing Environment
Once the Pilot Team has prepared a curriculum map that reflects the curriculum of a unit, academic quarter, or marking period, it’s time to share the map with colleagues, either all staff or selected grade-level and/or content-area teams. For example, a 4th-grade Pilot Team might present to the 3rd- and 5th-grade teams, who will extend theme integration into their curriculum maps or suggest curricular modifications between grade levels for better vertical alignment.
Alternatively, a high school science Pilot Team might present to the high school English and visual arts teams, who will consider ways to connect their curriculum maps for English and visual arts to the Pilot Team’s science curriculum or key questions.
Success at this stage depends on cultivating an environment conducive to collaborative learning. You can encourage the Pilot Team to share its collaborative experience with other teams, describing its curriculum mapping process while sharing pitfalls and breakthroughs and inviting feedback and suggestions. Download and use the Sharing the Mapping Process Protocol (.doc) to guide this collaborative process.
LEADERSHIP TIP
Ensure that Pilot Team members are prepared for the possibility that cross-team conversations may lead to revising their “model” curriculum map.
