Identify Standards and Assessments
Curriculum mapping should include standards and assessments—the other building blocks for teaching and learning activities. Here are some things to consider as you prepare your maps:
- Explicitly identify and map specific standards to ensure that district, state, and/or Common Core standards are being met throughout the curriculum and for the full time period the maps cover.
- Re-examine the standards for each unit, ensure their accuracy, and identify any standards that might be missing. Redefining skills and activities in a curriculum map can impact the relevance of the standards listed.
- Include assessments in the maps to help everyone see whether they truly measure the skills or content being taught.
- Encourage the team to consider alternative ways to measure student performance and proficiency, including formative assessments, student self-assessments, projects, or presentations.
